Low-quality, unwanted AI-generated content flooding your feeds. Merriam-Webster's 2025 Word of the Year and the defining internet critique of the AI era.

WHAT IS SLOP?

Slop is low-quality, mass-produced AI-generated content that nobody asked for — the weird Facebook images of Shrimp Jesus, the nonsensical AI articles clogging Google results, the uncanny valley videos flooding your TikTok FYP. Think of it as the AI era's version of spam, except it's everywhere and it looks just real enough to waste your time. Merriam-Webster crowned it their 2025 Word of the Year after it went from niche tech complaint to mainstream cultural critique.

HOW TO USE IT

As a noun (the content): Refers to AI-generated junk polluting feeds and search results. "My entire explore page is AI slop."
As a noun (the vibe): Describes anything low-effort and soulless, even if a human made it. "That brand's campaign is pure slop."
As a verb: The act of flooding the internet with garbage content. "They're just slopping out articles for ad revenue."
Derived forms: "Sloppified" (made worse by AI), "slopocalypse" (the feared future where slop overtakes real content), "slop era" (right now).

EXAMPLES

"Google is cooked, every result is AI slop now 😭"
"My aunt shared another Shrimp Jesus image... peak slop behavior"
"Not reading that, it has slop energy — zero original thought, maximum word count"
"The slopocalypse is here and your timeline is the proof"
